1992 Autozam AZ-1: This Awesome Little Kei Super Car Could Be Yours

Here at Sung’s Garage we love an Underdog. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is as underdog as it gets. This is the Autozam AZ-1 kei car, native to the Japanese market. It’s pure JDM of the early ’90s and is one of the coolest mid-engined sports car to this day. If you’re thinking it looks like it would fit nicely in your garage, then you’re in luck. This specific car is currently up for auction at Bring A Trailer.

Built in 1992 and later imported to the US, this AZ-1 currently lives in Houston, Texas with only 82,000 km, or 51,000 miles, on the clock. It’s finished in red with charcoal lower body panels, and its advert claims it’s in good running condition, backed up by a full service history alongside all of its import paperwork and a clean Texas title.

Currently sitting on 14-inch Volk Racing wheels wrapped in Federal tyres, the current owner was obviously one for modifications, but he’s kept the stock wheels too which are included in the sale. Lowered springs sit at each corner, and from the photos, the car looks to be in great condition minus a crack in the windshield.

On opening the ultra-cool gullwing doors, it’s Japanese heritage is evident with a right-hand drive layout. The cloth seats are finished in red and black, and overall it looks tidy. The air conditioning may not work, but this should be an easy fix for the initiated.

Powering the rear wheels is a Suzuki engine – a turbocharged 657 cc three-cylinder that produces a healthy 64 horsepower and 63 lb-ft of torque. While this sounds a little on the low side, compare this small car to any other, and you’ll realise it’s plenty of power for its minute size. The owner’s strapped on an aftermarket air filter and a turbo time, so it sounds the part, too.
