A Nissan Proto Z SUV Could Be On Its Way According To Company’s Vice President

The Nissan Z Proto reveal got our hearts racing again with its retro-themed styling and modern additions that made it, dare I say it, one of the best looking cars of 2020. I know you weren’t all loving the front bumper and yes there are a few changes I’d make to it, too. But it’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about a new car. The thing is, this isn’t the next Z. It’s only a prototype and while it will likely share a lot of its design with the next version, we don’t know for sure.

The next Z could be a challenge for Nissan, though. At the moment, it’s fair to say that the Japanese company isn’t in the best position financially right now, so it’s no surprise that, like every other car manufacturer out there, it’s looking towards an SUV cash cow. Rumour has it, this SUV will wear the Z name. Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Global Product Planning, admitted this during a press event.

“There’s always temptation, we’re always exploring these things,” Espinosa told CarAdvice when asked about a potential SUV.”The strength of Z – the brand – is so big, that it could potentially allow some wild things.”

The Proto Z was rumoured to possibly be an SUV of some kind before we got closer to the release, but it wouldn’t be the first legendary Japanese sports car to be turned into a high-riding 4×4. The Mitsubishi Eclipse that Paul Walker’s character Brian drives in The Fast and The Furious is long gone after it was replaced by an SUV wearing the same name. It’s a very sad time for enthusiasts…

But, hey. The next Z is coming. And if Nissan needs to make a Z SUV alongside it to be able to pay for the new sports car, then I’m not going to stop them.
