Christopher Nolan is one of my favourite directors. He’s behind some of the largest films ever to be produced such as Inception and Tenet, and was able to rekindle our love for superhero films through his Dark Knight Trilogy. And now, in a recent interview, he has admitted that he loves The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

He told the Happy Sad Confused podcast about his feelings for the movie, where Sung Kang played his iconic character Han Lue who drove a Veilside Fortune Mazda RX-7. It comes as no surprise that the Batman director has a thing for fast, modified cars, and in fact has a soft spot for all of the Fast films.

“I’m sort of original recipe… but I’ve got a very soft spot for Tokyo Drift, actually,” he said, adding “and then with Justin Lin’s iterations, as they got crazier and bigger and crazier and bigger, they became something else, but something else kind of fun.”

Tokyo Drift was always the odd one out of the movies until the character Han was drawn back into the films in the fifth of the series. His history and connection to Dom, played by Vin Diesel, was explained and his story was built upon. Unfortunately, he died at the end of Tokyo Drift, but as seen in the trailer to the next instalment of the series, he’s back and ready to get revenge.

The film was also a spectacle of practical effects and real-life modifications. The RB26 Mustang, for example, was actually modified with that engine. Nolan, a fan of practical stunts, was surely drawn to this.

Fast and Furious 9 hits cinemas next year, May 28th. Us here at Sung’s Garage are very excited to see what goes down.
