Sung Kang has revealed exactly how his character Han’s return was kept secret from the media as Fast 9 began filming. Of course, the character’s return is a large plot point of the upcoming Fast and Furious film, so giving the game away too early would have been detrimental to the teasing and promotion of the film.
While there were reports of Sung Kang being in London at the time of filming, nothing linked him to the filming of Fast 9 at the time, but while this was great for hiding the film’s story, it took its toll during filming.
“Justin [Lin] and Universal, everybody was really on top of hiding me on set. There’s a lot of cast photos early on. If you look at the Fast 9 photos from set, there’s all these birthday parties and stuff, I’m never invited,” he told Digital Spy.
“I would see the birthday cakes from afar, but it’s part of the fun. It’s really cool to be part of that kind of narrative.”
Fans are still unsure as to how Hand will return from the dead after being killed by Shaw in a revenge plot against the Fast Family. Thankfully, we don’t have too long to wait as Fast 9 is set to be released on the 23rd of this month in the UK and 24th in the USA.
Justin Lin and Sung Kang go back a long time to a film called Better Luck Tomorrow, which introduced us to the character of Han. This same character was developed in Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift.
“I think if it wasn’t Justin, I would be very concerned and apprehensive,” he explained. “But Justin and I, we developed the character together. He understands that character as much as I do.”
